Disclaimer: General sole-trader estimate only; GST credits, PSI rules, PAYG instalments, super obligations and individual tax circumstances may change the result.
Enter an hourly, daily or weekly contract rate to estimate annual invoices, GST, business income and spendable contractor pay. This Contractor Pay Calculator Australia also accounts for billable time, deductible expenses, income tax, Medicare levy and an optional super cash reserve.
What Is a Contractor Pay Calculator Australia?
A Contractor Pay Calculator Australia estimates how a contract rate may translate into annual business income and personal spendable pay. It is designed as a general sole-trader estimate for Australian contractors.
The calculator begins with an hourly, daily or weekly rate and multiplies it by the billable units and weeks entered. It then applies the selected GST treatment, subtracts deductible business expenses and estimates income tax and Medicare levy.
An optional super cash reserve can also be deducted. This is a planning amount rather than an automatic employer contribution or determination of a legal superannuation obligation.
Contractor income is not directly comparable with employee salary because contractors may need to cover unpaid leave, business expenses, insurance and retirement savings. The Simple Salary Calculator and Australian Salary Calculator can help you review employee salary separately.
How to Use the Contractor Pay Calculator Australia
Step 1: Enter your contract rate
Enter the amount charged for the selected rate basis. The visible placeholder changes according to your selection:
- Hourly rate: A$142.75
- Daily rate: A$1,085
- Weekly rate: A$5,240
Hourly is selected by default, so A$142.75 is the initial placeholder.
Step 2: Select the contract rate basis
Choose hourly, daily or weekly.
For an hourly rate, enter billable hours per week. For a daily rate, enter billable days per week. When weekly is selected, the calculator automatically uses one weekly unit.
The Income Calculator Australia can be used when you only need to convert gross income frequencies without tax, GST or expenses.
Step 3: Enter billable units
For the default hourly option, enter your billable hours per week. The placeholder is 32.5 hours.
Billable hours may be lower than total working hours because administration, marketing and other non-client tasks may not be invoiced.
For a daily rate, this field changes to billable days and shows a placeholder of 4.25 days.
Step 4: Enter billable weeks
Enter the number of weeks you expect to invoice during the year. The visible placeholder is 44.5 weeks.
Allow for unpaid holidays, public holidays, sick days, gaps between contracts and time spent finding work.
Step 5: Enter deductible business expenses
Enter estimated annual deductible expenses. The placeholder is A$13,780.
Only enter expenses relevant to the scenario. The calculator does not confirm whether a particular cost is deductible, and expenses must be lower than fee income before GST.
Step 6: Select the GST treatment
Choose one of these options:
- GST registered and rate excludes GST
- GST registered and rate includes GST
- Not GST registered
The default assumes that the entered rate excludes GST. The calculator adds 10% GST to invoices without treating the collected GST as business income.
Step 7: Enter an optional super cash reserve
Enter the percentage of net business income you want to reserve for super. The placeholder uses 14.2%.
The entered percentage must be between zero and 50%.
Step 8: Choose Medicare levy treatment
The default selection includes a flat 2% Medicare levy estimate. The alternative option excludes the levy.
Step 9: Press Calculate
The calculator displays annual invoices, GST collected, net business income, estimated tax and Medicare, super reserve, annual spendable pay and average monthly spendable pay.
The Software Salary Tool offers another salary-planning format, while the Payroll Calculator Australia is intended for payroll estimates.
How Is Contractor Pay Calculated?
For an hourly rate:
Annual billings before GST = Hourly rate × Billable hours × Billable weeks
For a daily rate:
Annual billings before GST = Daily rate × Billable days × Billable weeks
For a weekly rate:
Annual billings before GST = Weekly rate × Billable weeks
When the rate excludes GST:
GST collected = Billings before GST × 10%
Invoices including GST = Billings before GST + GST
When the entered rate includes GST, the calculator divides invoices by 1.10 to determine fee income and treats the difference as GST.
Net business income is:
Net business income = Fee income before GST − Deductible expenses
The calculator applies its 2026–27 resident income-tax rates and estimated Low Income Tax Offset to net business income. A flat 2% Medicare estimate is added when selected.
The super reserve is:
Super reserve = Net business income × Entered reserve percentage
Spendable contractor pay is:
Spendable pay = Net business income − Estimated tax and Medicare − Super reserve
The Salary Tax Planning Calculator can be used separately for broader salary and tax scenarios.
Australian Contractor Pay Example
This example uses every visible placeholder and all default selections:
- Contract rate: A$142.75 per hour
- Billable hours: 32.5 per week
- Billable weeks: 44.5 per year
- Deductible business expenses: A$13,780
- GST treatment: Registered; rate excludes GST
- Super cash reserve: 14.2%
- Medicare treatment: Include flat 2% estimate
Annual contractor fee income before GST is:
A$142.75 × 32.5 × 44.5 = A$206,452.19
GST collected is:
A$206,452.19 × 10% = A$20,645.22
Invoices including GST are:
A$206,452.19 + A$20,645.22 = A$227,097.41
Net business income after the entered expenses is:
A$206,452.19 − A$13,780 = A$192,672.19
The calculator estimates income tax and the flat Medicare levy at A$56,425.93.
The optional super cash reserve is:
A$192,672.19 × 14.2% = A$27,359.45
Estimated annual spendable contractor pay is:
A$192,672.19 − A$56,425.93 − A$27,359.45 = A$108,886.81
Average monthly spendable pay is:
A$108,886.81 ÷ 12 = A$9,073.90
The calculator displays:
- Annual invoices including GST: A$227,097.41
- GST collected: A$20,645.22
- Net business income: A$192,672.19
- Estimated income tax and Medicare: A$56,425.93
- Optional super cash reserve: A$27,359.45
- Annual spendable contractor pay: A$108,886.81
- Average monthly spendable pay: A$9,073.90
These figures exactly match the calculator code for the placeholder example.
The Salary Budget Calculator can help compare monthly spendable pay with personal expenses. The calculator itself does not create a business budget or reserve money automatically.
How Does GST Affect Contractor Income?
GST collected is not treated as spendable contractor income in this calculator. It is separated from fee income before expenses and income tax are calculated.
When “Not GST registered” is selected, the calculator prevents a result if estimated turnover reaches A$75,000. The ATO states that a business generally needs to register when its GST turnover reaches the applicable A$75,000 threshold; check the current ATO GST registration guidance.
The estimate does not calculate GST credits on business purchases, Business Activity Statement amounts or PAYG instalments. Actual GST obligations can depend on registration status, business activities and reporting method.
Contractor Pay vs Employee Take-Home Pay
Spendable contractor pay is not the same as employee take-home pay. Contractors may personally fund business costs, unpaid leave, insurance and super, while employees may receive paid leave and employer-funded benefits.
Use the Take Home Pay Calculator for an employee-style net-pay estimate. The Salary Sacrifice Calculator and Car Salary Sacrifice Calculator apply to different packaging scenarios and are not included here.
The Tax Refund Estimate Calculator compares withholding with estimated liability, while the Tax Return Calculator estimates an end-of-year tax result. Neither result should be confused with annual contractor revenue.
