Disclaimer: 2026–27 Australian-resident estimate only; exclusions, offsets, Medicare circumstances, franking credits and ATO assessments may change the result.
Add your salary, other taxable income, eligible deductions and tax withheld to estimate your 2026–27 tax-return outcome. The calculator shows whether the entered figures produce an estimated refund or amount payable.
What Is a Tax Return Calculator?
A Tax Return Calculator in Australia estimates an Australian resident’s income-tax position before a return is assessed. It calculates total income, deductions, taxable income, basic income tax, Low Income Tax Offset, Medicare levy and estimated total liability.
The calculator then compares the liability with the tax withheld entered. When withholding is higher, it displays an estimated refund; when withholding is lower, it displays an estimated amount payable.
People may call this tool a tax return estimator, Australian Tax Return Calculator, tax return estimator Australia or australian tax return estimator. Regardless of the wording, it provides an estimate and does not lodge a return or issue an ATO assessment.
The Simple Salary Calculator helps users review regular salary separately. The Australian Salary Calculator is useful when the goal is to understand salary and take-home pay rather than calculate tax return figures from several income and deduction categories.
How to Use the Tax Return Calculator
Step 1: Enter salary and wages
Enter your annual employment income. The visible placeholder is A$96,000.
Step 2: Enter bank interest
Add taxable interest received from bank accounts or similar sources. The placeholder is A$4,000.
Step 3: Enter taxable dividends
Enter the taxable dividend income relevant to your estimate. The placeholder uses A$8,000.
The calculator does not separately account for franking credits. Entering taxable dividends does not mean that associated credits are automatically included.
Step 4: Enter other taxable income
Add other taxable income not included in the previous fields. The placeholder is A$12,000.
Contractors can use the Contractor Pay Calculator Australia to estimate contractor earnings before transferring an appropriate figure into a tax-return scenario.
Step 5: Enter work-related deductions
Enter estimated eligible work-related deductions. The visible placeholder is A$6,000.
Step 6: Enter deductible gifts and donations
Add eligible deductible gifts or donations. The placeholder is A$3,000.
Step 7: Enter other eligible deductions
Enter other deductions relevant to the estimate. The placeholder is A$14,000.
The calculator does not verify whether an entered expense qualifies as a deduction. Keep appropriate records and confirm eligibility separately.
Step 8: Enter total tax withheld
Enter the complete tax withheld during the income year. The placeholder uses A$22,000.
The Payroll Calculator Australia totals user-entered PAYG withholding for a payroll scenario, while this calculator compares annual withholding with estimated liability.
Step 9: Select Medicare levy treatment
“Standard single taxpayer” is selected by default. A full-year exemption can be selected when applicable.
The standard option includes the calculator’s programmed Medicare levy thresholds and phase-in calculation. It does not assess every personal, family or medical circumstance.
Step 10: Press Calculate
The results show:
- Estimated refund or amount payable
- Total income
- Total deductions
- Taxable income
- Income tax before LITO
- Automatic LITO
- Medicare levy
- Estimated total liability
- Tax withheld entered
The Software Salary Tool may support another form of salary planning, but it does not replace this tax return calculation.
How Is an Australian Tax Return Estimated?
Total income is:
Total income = Salary + Interest + Dividends + Other taxable income
Total deductions are:
Total deductions = Work deductions + Deductible gifts + Other eligible deductions
Taxable income is:
Taxable income = Total income − Total deductions
The calculator applies its programmed 2026–27 Australian resident tax rates:
- A$0–A$18,200: No income tax
- A$18,201–A$45,000: 16% of the amount over A$18,200
- A$45,001–A$135,000: A$4,288 plus 30% of the amount over A$45,000
- A$135,001–A$190,000: A$31,288 plus 37% of the amount over A$135,000
- Above A$190,000: A$51,638 plus 45% of the amount over A$190,000
Automatic LITO is calculated where the programmed income conditions apply. It cannot reduce income tax below zero.
For the standard single-taxpayer option, the Medicare levy is zero at or below A$28,011, phases in between A$28,011 and A$35,013, and is estimated at 2% above that range.
The final comparison is:
Balance = Tax withheld − Estimated total liability
The Salary Tax Planning Calculator can be used earlier in the year to compare broader tax-planning scenarios.
Australian Tax Return Calculation Example
This example uses every calculator placeholder and the default Medicare selection:
- Salary and wages: A$96,000
- Bank interest: A$4,000
- Taxable dividends: A$8,000
- Other taxable income: A$12,000
- Work-related deductions: A$6,000
- Deductible gifts and donations: A$3,000
- Other eligible deductions: A$14,000
- Total tax withheld: A$22,000
- Medicare treatment: Standard single taxpayer
Total income is:
A$96,000 + A$4,000 + A$8,000 + A$12,000 = A$120,000
Total deductions are:
A$6,000 + A$3,000 + A$14,000 = A$23,000
Taxable income is:
A$120,000 − A$23,000 = A$97,000
Income tax before LITO is:
A$4,288 + (A$97,000 − A$45,000) × 30% = A$19,888
No LITO is applied at this taxable income. The Medicare levy is:
A$97,000 × 2% = A$1,940
Estimated total liability is:
A$19,888 + A$1,940 = A$21,828
The estimated refund is:
A$22,000 − A$21,828 = A$172
The calculator therefore displays:
- Estimated refund: A$172.00
- Total income: A$120,000.00
- Total deductions: A$23,000.00
- Taxable income: A$97,000.00
- Income tax before LITO: A$19,888.00
- Automatic LITO: A$0.00
- Medicare levy: A$1,940.00
- Estimated total liability: A$21,828.00
- Tax withheld entered: A$22,000.00
These figures exactly match the calculator code. The earlier A$1,664 refund and net-income figures did not match its placeholders or outputs.
Estimated Refund vs Amount Payable
A calculator for tax refund planning can show either outcome. A refund may arise when tax withheld exceeds estimated liability, while tax refund payable wording generally refers to an additional amount due when withholding is insufficient.
A simple tax return calculator cannot confirm the final outcome without complete information. A tax return Australia calculator may also exclude credits, surcharges, study-loan repayments and individual adjustments.
The Take Home Pay Calculator estimates regular after-tax pay. The Income Calculator Australia can convert income entered at different pay frequencies, while the Tax Refund Estimate Calculator provides a shorter refund-versus-payable calculation using fewer inputs.
Salary sacrifice and packaged vehicles may change taxable income. Review salary sacrifice separately and use the Car Salary Sacrifice Calculator for a packaged-vehicle estimate.
What the Calculator Does Not Include
This calculator does not include HELP repayments, Medicare Levy Surcharge, franking credits, refundable offsets, capital-gains details, foreign-tax adjustments or PAYG instalments.
Although users may still search for an income tax return calculator 2026, this calculator specifically states that it uses 2026–27 settings.
For a more detailed official estimate, compare the result with the ATO Income Tax Estimator. The Salary Budget Calculator can then help plan how a refund or amount payable may affect a household budget.
